Wind power sees strong public support, survey finds - 20/04/2012

A large number of people may be keen to go green and switch to an energy supplier using renewable power, as a new survey has found wind farms have widespread support in the UK.

Research conducted by Ipsos Mori on behalf of RenewableUK revealed two-thirds of respondents say they support the use of wind turbines to generate electricity in the UK, with 28 per cent saying they are strongly in favour of the technology.

Only eight per cent said they were opposed to wind power, with three per cent strongly objecting, while 57 per cent said they had no problems with the visual impact turbines have on the landscape.

The findings of the survey may indicate there is little support for newly formed lobbying group National Opposition to Windfarms, which launched this week in Westminster.

Chief executive of RenewableUK Maria McCaffery said the results of the survey strongly indicate people are happy to increase the use of wind power in the UK.

She added: "It is therefore not only undemocratic to allow the vocal anti-wind minority to derail the UK's plans for renewable energy, but also damaging to our economy."
