Energy bills 'to rise by £300' - 06/09/2011
Householders will see rises in energy bills as the impact of the government’s green policy is felt across the country, the prime minister has been warned.
A senior Downing Street adviser has told David Cameron that the coalition's green plans will lead to an average increase of £300 in domestic energy bills, the Daily Telegraph reported.
In a private note to the prime minister, seen by the newspaper, energy adviser Ben Boxham warns that plans to increase nuclear power and wind turbines will add as much as 30 per cent to household gas and electricity bills by 2020.
"Over time it is clear that the impact of our policies on consumer bills will become significantly greater," the letter reads.
Claims made by energy secretary Chris Huhne that rises in gas prices would be offset by a reduction in energy usage were described as "unconvincing".
The prime minister is believed to be "very worried" by the contents of the letter.
