Last sub-£1,000 energy tariff axed - 06/10/2011

The last remaining energy tariff offering consumers average annual bills of under £1,000 has been axed, which may leave individuals needing to perform an energy price comparison to find a cheap deal.

Scottish Power withdrew its cheapest Online Energy Saver 15 offer this week, shortly after a similar move by EDF Energy, which means there are now no gas and electricity tariffs on the market for less than £1,000, with the cheapest energy deal now being EDF's Discount Plan v5, at £1,024 a year.

Director of independent energy price comparison service Energyhelpline.com Mark Todd said the news "emphasises in stark terms how bills are reaching historic levels".

He added: "It also underlines the fact that customers, if they haven't switched yet, need to act fast."

Mr Todd noted that with winter coming, energy tariffs are unlikely to get any cheaper, so consumers should consider signing up for a fixed-term gas and electricity product or cheap internet deal now if they want to cut their bills this year.
