An increasing reliance on renewable energy sources will be essential for the UK if people are to find cheap gas and electricity prices in the future.
This is according to Renewables UK, which warned that costs for household energy will continue to increase if the country sustains its reliance on fossil fuels as a primary means of generating power.
Communications director at the group Charles Austin said: "The recent rises in electricity bills have been caused by the global increase in the price of gas, not by renewables."
This was echoed by the WWF, which criticised an edition of the BBC's Panorama programme this week that looked at the causes of increasing fuel bills.
The charity's head of energy policy Nick Mohlo said the show presented a partial view of the market and downplayed the role that renewables can have in cutting electricity bills.
Mr Mohlo added there is a great deal of potential for reducing the cost of green energy sources if companies are incentivised to spend more on research.
