Delays on cheap energy wind farms could be unblocked - 04/09/2009

Homeowners looking to switch energy to a cleaner source could be encouraged by news that around 60 gigawatts of electricity capacity could soon be connected to the grid.

While many wind farm projects are being built around the UK, it can take years for the completed turbines to be connected to the grid and be in a position to sell electricity to national energy suppliers, reports the Herald.

Hill farmers in Scotland can make up to £20,000 a year for each turbine erected on their land, so removing connection delays could be especially welcome in rural communities.

Savills Energy specialist Nick Green told the paper: "Wind farm developers are among the worst affected by connection issues. Current estimates are that projects will have to wait nine years before they can be connected."

He added that connection delays have been hampering Scotland's ability to take advantage of its renewable energy potential.

The government in Westminster recently announcement plans for an escalation in the number of offshore wind farms to be developed around the UK's coast.
