MSPs back snubbing of nuclear cheap energy - 02/07/2009

Scottish homeowners will not be able to compare energy prices with nuclear sources as a committee of MSPs has backed plans to snub nuclear redevelopment.

As a compromise, however, the committee has called for the life-spans of the country's existing nuclear power plants to be extended in order to plug any energy gaps that arise while further forms of renewable energy are devised.

Scotland's nuclear infrastructure is scheduled to begin shutting down in 2016 and so the committee is encouraging more energy firms to invest in renewables.

Scottish National Party MSP Rob Gibson, deputy convener of the committee and opposed to nuclear energy, said: "There is no desire across the Scottish parliament for new nuclear energy in Scotland and a real enthusiasm for building a clean, green future."

The Scottish government leads the UK in terms of renewable energy generation but has nonetheless been criticised by the government in Westminster for refusing to consider developing nuclear infrastructure alongside projects such as wind farms.
