Energy suppliers commit to in-home displays for smart meters - 26/11/2009

Many homeowners could be looking forward to the opportunity to switch energy practices using smart meters and now energy firms have agreed to supply monitors as well.

The government plans to organise a nationwide roll-out of smart meters by 2020, but this is the first time energy suppliers have committed to providing monitors that can be read by homeowners, in addition to the smart meters themselves.

Monitors could be used to reveal easy-to-read information regarding energy consumption habits, in addition to having this data sent directly to suppliers.

Garry Felgate, chief executive of the Energy Retail Association, which represents energy firms, said: "With this new commitment on display devices, customers will also benefit by being able to choose how they view this information so that it suits their personal preferences and needs."

Energy companies will also save money in the long term using smart meters as they will not have to send out staff to read meters.
