Government unveils boiler scrappage scheme - 05/01/2010

The government has launched a new boiler scrappage scheme which allows householders to save money on the cost of a new boiler.

Up to 125,000 householders in England will be able to save around £400 off the cost of a new boiler under the scheme, which will help reduce CO2 emissions and cut down on energy bills.

To qualify, households need to have a working G-rated boiler which is gas fired and more than 15 years old. The scheme is only open to people who own their homes or landlords who rent homes.

A number of energy companies are expected to use the scheme to attract business. British Gas, the biggest boiler installer in the UK, said it is planning to match the government's £400 discount.

According to the government, the boiler scrappage scheme, which will cost around £50 million, will help safeguard thousands of jobs across the industry.

Climate secretary Ed Miliband said the scheme is expected to save householders around £200 off their heating bills every year.
