Ofgem urges consumers to switch gas providers - 24/02/2010

Energy regular Ofgem has urged consumers to switch gas providers in order to make saving on their energy bills.

The body said that British Gas's recent price cut and the range of online discounted and fixed-price cheap energy deals means that consumers can significantly reduce costs if they switch energy providers.

"Savings of up to £100 a year are available on standard tariffs and even larger savings are available on non-standard deals," Ofgem said in a statement.

The energy regulator predicted that energy prices are expected to rise in the longer term to pay for the £200 billion investment which is needed to secure supplies and reduce carbon emissions, so customers should research their cheap energy options in order to make savings.

Last year, Ofgem contacted the big six energy suppliers urging them to reduce their prices and so far, only British Gas has responded with its seven per cent reduction of its gas prices.
