Homes run by solar energy - 01/03/2011
Customers hoping to switch energy deal might be interested to hear that a housing association in County Durham has opened a development run on solar power.
The ten bungalows in St Helen Auckland have been fitted with photovoltaic solar panels on their roofs to generate green electricity.
Durham Aged Mineworkers' Homes Association, which is behind the housing scheme, will sell any surplus power back to the national grid.
The project was partially funded by the Homes and Communities Agency. Area manager Bill Carr commented: "With a range of green and energy saving features, these homes are well designed, warm and less expensive to run.
"Our role is all about helping to make things happen in local communities and this is another great example of that local approach in action," he added.
Energy users who are interested in using green power could look into government incentives, such as the feed-in tariff scheme, which allows homeowners to save money on their energy bills.
