Govt criticised for handling of solar subsidies - 18/05/2012

The government's plans to alter subsidies for people looking to get cheap electricity from solar power have been attacked by the Labour Party.

Shadow energy and climate change secretary Caroline Flint described the coalition's actions in the area as "shambolic", noting it has resulted in the number of installations plummeting and cost thousands of jobs in the industry.

She said: "Ministers must own up, end the uncertainty and scrap the cuts planned for July, before the sun sets on the British solar industry for good."

Responding to a query from Ms Flint in parliament, energy secretary Ed Davey admitted the government is considering tweaking the start date for the next Feed-in Tariff reduction, but insisted there will be no major changes, the Press Association reports.

He added the government has consulted closely with the solar industry to listen to their concerns and the proposals will bring stability to the market and enable more people to fit the technology.
