Adopting green policies could have people in the UK get cheap energy by reducing the impact of higher prices for fossil fuels.
This is according to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, which said the effect of spiralling coal, gas and oil costs on the UK could be reduced by up to 50 per cent if the right course if followed.
Energy secretary Ed Davey said steps to build a low-carbon economy and reduce the nation's dependence on imported fossil fuels will be vital in keeping bills as low as possible.
"Only last year, the impact of the Arab Spring on wholesale gas prices pushed up UK household bills by 20 per cent" he observed.
Therefore, the more the UK can shift to home-grown alternative fuels and improve its efficiency, the less exposed it will be to volatile global markets and unpredictable events, Mr Davey continued.
Earlier this week, Friends of the Earth urged the government to pursue green goals as part of its reform of the electricity market, noting 85 per cent of the public support a shift away from fossil fuels.
