Nuclear concerns 'drive gas demand' - 18/05/2011

Concerns about nuclear energy are likely to drive demand for cheap gas, particularly in the wake of the meltdown at Japan's Fukushima power plant.

This is the view of Pat Davies, chief executive of petrochemical company Sasol, who told the Financial Times that the natural disasters that struck Japan earlier this year are continuing to have an effect on energy prices in other parts of the world.

He noted that the need for natural gas "will also be driven by robust demand in China as they need a huge amount of gas there", as well as by environmental issues, as gas has a smaller carbon footprint than other fossil fuels.

To avoid the next round of domestic energy price hikes, consumers could compare energy tariffs and opt for a fixed rate deal.
