UK energy prices vulnerable to markets - 01/07/2011

Domestic energy users will be hit with electricity bills that rise three times faster than those in France unless Britain diversifies its energy mix.

This is the warning from energy secretary Chris Huhne, who pointed out that a reliance on fossil fuels makes customers in the UK more vulnerable to fluctuations in the global markets.

The minister said UK consumers will see electricity prices rise by about nine per cent, compared with France's expected hike of three per cent.

He told the Prince of Wales' Corporate Leaders Group: "It is no surprise that France is the European country with the least reliance on fossil fuels, and enjoys some of the lowest prices."

Meanwhile, British Gas has hinted for the second time in a month that it could soon increase its tariff rates.
