Green electricity generation falls 6% - 04/07/2011

The amount of green energy produced by wind turbines in the UK dropped by six per cent over the course of 2010, according to government statistics.

Energy generated by onshore wind farms accounted for 1.9 per cent of total electricity last year, compared with two per cent the previous year.

But despite the "unusually low" winds in 2010, the proportion of cheap electricity produced by renewable sources went up by 2.2 per cent from 2009.

A spokesman from the Department of Energy and Climate Change commented: "Even against a backdrop of the lowest average wind speeds this century in 2010 and the lowest rainfall since 2003, overall consumption of renewable energy in 2010 has risen significantly on the previous year."

Britain is working towards generating 15 per cent of energy from green sources.
