Rush for solar panels as deadline looms - 02/11/2011

A cut to the Feed-in Tariffs paid to people with solar panels on their roofs that comes into effect next month has led to a surge in demand from homeowners looking to get cheap electricity.

The Daily Mail reports that since the plans to slash fees from 43.3 pence per kilowatt hour to 21 pence were announced this week by energy minister Greg Barker, thousands of individuals have rushed to sign up ahead of the December 12th deadline.

Those who register with the scheme after this date will be subject to the lower payments, which has led to many solar companies being fully booked until Christmas, the newspaper stated.

Many of these firms have warned of a disastrous effect on their business when the changes come into effect.

Howard Johns of the Solar Trade Association stated it would prevent people on lower incomes from having access to the technology, which he said is the best way to protect against rising fuel bills.
