Cumbria Green Business Forum: Cheap energy renewable power will safeguard future - 30/11/2009

Choosing to switch energy to a renewable infrastructure is the best way to safeguard the UK's energy future, according to the Cumbria Green Business Forum.

John Barwise, chairman of the Cumbria Green Business Forum, said a range of different renewable energy technologies should be developed and combined with a smart grid system to provide additional power supplies.

He added that the first priority should be to reduce the amount of energy being wasted, before developing new sources.

Mr Barwise said: "Renewables is the only resource that guarantees security of UK energy supplies for the long-term."

The expert went on to say that renewables present the best option as much of the UK's coal is now imported and UK-owned natural gas supplies are running out, all of which means it is necessary to compare energy resources.

The government recently announced plans to escalate offshore wind farm development, in a bid to reduce the UK's national carbon footprint and tackle bills from energy suppliers.
