Government leads cheap energy drive - 02/11/2010

Energy and climate secretary Chris Huhne has confirmed a new scheme designed to encourage people to access cheap energy bills through improving the eco-friendliness of their homes.

The new Green Deal aims to reduce the £3 billion of energy that is wasted each year through inefficient homes and buildings.

Up to 100,000 workers are set to be employed under the Green Deal in order to boost levels of insulation in homes across the country.

Speaking at the British Gas Energy Academy in Thatcham, Mr Huhne said: "I want Britain to say goodbye forever to leaky lofts and chilly draughts. At a time of increasing gas prices energy efficiency is a no-brainer."

He added that the new scheme could help to provide a range of new jobs - an important factor in the drive to boost economic productivity.

The Green Deal is expected to become available from autumn 2012 and both business and domestic consumers will be able to benefit.
