Energy suppliers should be investigated for doorstep mis-selling to consumers, a panel of MPs has claimed.
The Energy Committee said that mis-selling of cheap energy products by salesmen was a "serious" problem, the Daily Telegraph reported.
It comes after Scottish and Southern was found guilty of misleading potential customers and encouraging them to switch energy through doorstep selling.
Tim Yeo, chairman of the energy committee, told the Big Six energy firms: "You've got guys out there incentivised to lie to consumers to sell them products that are more expensive than the alternatives. It looks to me like quite a serious issue."
"We've got a responsibility to put a stop to this rather soon and pay back that money which you've taken from them which they shouldn't have paid," he added.
Consumers who wish to switch energy providers without having to deal with pushy salesman can do so through online energy comparison.
