Householders wanting to compare energy prices might be tempted to invest in solar panels with which to generate their own cheap electricity.
Residents in the London borough of Ealing have done exactly that, except the cost of installing and maintaining the photovoltaic panels has been met by an energy company.
Carillion Energy Services is using the feed-in tariff to deliver small-scale energy generating equipment to social housing tenants in the west London area, with the power produced by the panels being free to use by the residents.
One tenant, Josephine Hopper, said the panels provide her with clean, renewable energy and help cut down her fuel bills.
"I check the meter regularly and on a sunny day you really get to see how little you are paying for your energy. It is certainly worth having," she added.
Meanwhile, research from Ernst & Young has placed the UK sixth in its list of most attractive country for renewable energy investment.
