Taking the time to compare energy suppliers to find a cheap gas deal could prove useful to many people, particularly older individuals who may not have a large income.
It has been stated by Phil Brewster, spokesman for Gas Safe Register, that a large number of pensioners could be afraid to use their central heating systems because they are concerned about the impact of rising energy prices.
This may be one reason why the UK has the highest excess winter death rate in northern Europe, he suggested.
"A lot of elderly people tend to have older houses with older, less efficient gas appliances and that's perhaps what they are worried about - the cost," Mr Brewster continued.
He urged individuals to check on any elderly relatives or neighbours to make sure they are using their heating and are keeping warm as the weather becomes colder.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics reveal more than 25,000 people die from cold-related illnesses every year.
