Renewables industry criticises 'flawed' report - 13/12/2011

People looking for to switch energy to a supplier that uses renewable sources may be interested to hear the green power industry has criticised a new report that claims such technology will not meet the UK's needs.

The Adam Smith Institute's Renewable Energy: Vision or Mirage study stated innovations such as wind and marine electricity generation will be unable to replace fossil fuels and nuclear - even with further development - due to their high costs and intermittent nature.

However, this view has been slammed by Niall Stuart, chief executive of Scottish Renewables, who said the report is "full of serious flaws and oversights" and presents a "one-sided argument".

He added the authors have failed to highlight evidence showing that the costs for renewable energy sources have been dropping significantly, while at the same time, expenses for imported gas are rising.

"Investing in renewable energy today means protecting consumers from volatile gas prices and reducing spikes in energy bills for consumers in the future," Mr Stuart continued.
