Charity campaigns for cheap energy for Welsh pensioners - 03/03/2009

Charity Help the Aged will campaign for Welsh pensioners to receive more help to tackle price rises from energy suppliers next winter, reports the Daily Post.

Pensioners comprise a large proportion of the more than five million estimated households currently living in fuel poverty around the UK.

The charity will be working to ensure that pensioners are aware of the help they can get in tackling price rises and having free or low-cost insulation installed in their homes.

Mared Williams, Help the Aged's campaign officer for Wales, told the paper: "This year's winter campaigns will be more important than ever before and it's about making people aware as early as possible of the help available to them before it's too late."

She added that high prices through the recent freezing weather conditions have been a big problem for pensioners across Wales and she also called for pensions to be increased to reflect price increases.

Fuel poor households are those that allocate more than ten per cent of their annual income towards energy bill payments.
