Geothermal plant could provide cheap energy - 02/06/2009
Prices from energy suppliers could potentially be tackled with plans for a new geothermal plant that is being developed by the Eden Project and EGS Energy.
The Eden Project, based in Cornwall, plans to use heat emitted from underground granite outcrops within its complex as a way of reducing carbon emissions, while it could also impact on energy costs, reports the Guardian.
Spare heat energy generated from the plant could be supplied to the National Grid and additional projects could eventually cater for ten per cent of the UK's national energy needs.
Matt Hastings, Eden's energy manager, said: "It's a massively exciting project - a way of making sure Eden has a source of green power but also of feeding heat and power into the local community and into the National Grid."
The Department of Energy and Climate Change has warned that the UK is not on course to reach its clean energy obligations, reports the Times.
