'Slow progress' made in Copenhagen on how ICT can reduce business energy costs - 14/12/2009

Businesses may be looking to switch energy practices, but discussions on how to use information and communication technology (ICT) to reduce emissions and costs are slow, says Gartner.

Simon Mingay, research vice-president of lead sustainability for organisation strategies at Gartner, said that while there are lots of references being made to the 18-month-old Smart 2020 report, which focused on the role of ICT, nothing new has been suggested.

He voiced his disappointment that although the ICT industry was making its voice heard with greater clarity, little real progress seemed to be being made.

Mr Mingay said: "It's great for those who haven't heard the message, but it's just the same old same old for those that have."

Delegates at the 15h Conference of the Parties have been urged to tackle emissions using advanced technology.

Businesses can choose to pursue cheap energy costs by taking measures such as ensuring non-essential electrical equipment is turned off during evenings and weekends.
