One energy supplier has criticised a claim from the shadow energy secretary Greg Clark that the country is running low on gas supplies.
According to the Independent, an unnamed source at one of the country's major energy suppliers argued that the claim the country has around a week's worth of gas remaining does not reflect the full situation.
"The UK has relied on a mixture of gas supplies, and while stored gas supplies ran low, the reality is that the country would never have run out. The truth is that even in the worst case, there is still enough gas to supply the UK until the middle of March," the source told the paper.
Energy secretary Ed Miliband argued that the country's supplies have worked well during the cold spell and that no home or business has run out of energy.
Concerns do remain, however, that consumers will face much larger bills than usual as a result of the colder climate.
