Government urged to focus on green energy - 20/01/2010

The government needs to ensure it continues to focus on green energy, the Renewable Energy Centre has said.

A spokesperson for the organisation said it is "critical" that renewable energy becomes an integral part of the offerings delivered by UK energy suppliers.

The spokesperson welcomed the government's recent announcement of a £100 billion investment in offshore wind technology, saying it will definitely provide a boost to the renewable energy industry in the UK, but called for more to be done to ensure a workforce is ready to cope with the implementation.

"With implementation timescales a few years away, it is important that the government seizes this time to ensure the skills and workforce are in place to accommodate the expansion of the wind energy industry," he said.

The Scottish government recently approved a major wind energy development at Muaitheabhal, South Lewis.

The development will consist of 33 turbines, each measuring 145 metres high - taller than the London Eye.
