Energy suppliers EDF to hike electricity prices - 01/09/2010

Energy suppliers EDF plan to increase the price of electricity for some 1.2 million customers next month, it has emerged.

From October 1st, EDF will increase the price of electricity by 2.6 per cent, causing the average bill to rise from £429 to £438 a year, while the average dual fuel bill will increase from £1,159 to £1,167.

The price hike, which will affect 11 out of EDF's 14 energy regions, has been attributed to rising distribution and transmission costs.

More than a third (37 per cent) of EDF's electricity customers will be affected by the price rise, which works out at around an extra £10 per household per year. However, customers on fixed-price deals will not be affected, which may encourage those on variable deals to switch energy options.

Audrey Gallagher of industry watchdog Consumer Focus said the price rice is not warranted.

"For months they have failed to pass on significant cuts in energy wholesale prices," she said.
