'Take action' to find cheap energy for winter - 01/11/2010

Consumers are still in a position to be able to benefit from the use of cheap energy, despite the announcement of a gas price rise.

Scottish and Southern Energy last week confirmed that its gas prices would increase from December 1st. Consumers may be able to limit the impact of such a rise by opting to compare energy suppliers to find the best deal.

The Guardian reports that there are a range of options open to consumers hoping to limit their outgoings on domestic energy.

Opting for dual fuel payments can help consumers to unlock discounts, the newspaper said, adding that choosing to pay by direct debit can also help.

Other ways to limit the cost of domestic energy can be to use the most effective online tariffs, the newspaper said, noting they are "consistently the most competitive plans in the market".

Scottish and Southern Energy claimed it has been making a loss on its gas sales and that the latest price increase comes as part of a move to better cover costs.
