Failure to turn down heating in spring adds to bills - 27/04/2011

Despite the recent run of high temperatures and sunny weather, millions of people could be paying too much on their gas bills by keeping their heating on.

According to research from British Gas, almost half (46 per cent) of the population still have not turned down their thermostat since January this year, even though temperatures outside have soared to 23 degrees Celsius.

Kim Woodburn, of Channel 4's How Clean Is Your House, commented: "With a squeeze on household bills, it is madness to throw money away through wasted energy.

"Sorting out your heating for the warmer months is a first step but there are so many quick and easy things you can do as part of your regular spring clean routine. For example, simply de-scaling your kettle allows the water to boil more quickly using less energy."

Householders wanting to reduce their cheap energy usage could also replace old lightbulbs with energy efficient ones, which the energy supplier calculated save around £40 over the lifetime of the bulb.
