The way to reduce fuel poverty is to break the "stranglehold" of the Big Six energy suppliers on the market, UNISON has claimed.
Speaking at the annual Labour conference, the union's Julie Robinson noted that millions of UK consumers have a "real fear" about paying their gas and electricity bills.
"Because fuel poverty in Britain has reached a scandalous level: five million households in the United Kingdom. And one third of Scots in fuel poverty," she pointed out.
"There is supposed to be competition, but isn't it amazing how the prices all go up at the same time? And by the same amount? Is it just coincidence? I don't think so, and Labour should be pushing the Office of Fair Trading to have a closer look."
Ms Robinson's remarks came after Labour leader Ed Miliband promised that the dominance of the Big Six would be broken under the next Labour government.
