Brits 'must be more aware' of gas safety - 03/11/2011
Individuals looking to compare energy deals to find cheap gas prices need to be better educated about the potential dangers of their central heating systems.
This is according to Stephanie Trotter, president and co-director of CO-Gas Safety, who said people often do not appreciate the seriousness of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.
Her comments follow a recent survey by the Carbon Monoxide - Be Alarmed campaign that revealed only one in five people understand the gas can be fatal and two-thirds of homes do not have a CO alarm.
Ms Trotter added that while fitting these devices have saved many lives, "it is surely better that everyone is made aware of the dangers so they can use their common sense to avoid dying or being injured".
She explained symptoms of CO poisoning can include tiredness, nauseas and a general off-colour feeling similar to that caused by a virus.
However, she noted CO can kill in minutes at a high enough concentration, so it is better to test the air for the presence of the gas rather than be overly concerned about the symptoms, which can often be misdiagnosed.
