Energy costs 'hit older people hard' - 26/09/2011

With the cost of energy set to be even higher this winter, householders could be better off searching online for the best gas and electricity prices and switching to a different tariff.

The Ely Standard points out that with EDF announcing its own price hike, customers will be hard hit by rising costs as we head into the coldest months of the year.

Figures from the Alliance Trust Research Centre show people aged 65 to 74 are most vulnerable to increases in the cost of living because rising inflation is affecting them disproportionally.

At 5.4 per cent, consumers in this age group are suffering the effects of the fastest rate of price change since October 2008, the organisation's research found.

It is also significantly higher than the headline inflation rate of 4.5 per cent.

Energy costs have been cited as one of the key drivers behind increasing inflation, so customers could compare gas and electricity prices today to get a better deal.
