Renewable schemes best to access cheap energy in Western Isles - 04/02/2009
Renewable schemes have been highlighted as the best way to access cheap energy for homeowners in the Western Isles, reports the Press and Journal.
A report from the North Uist Partnership found that energy sourced from biomass and two wind turbines could both produce carbon neutrality and help tackle price rises from energy suppliers.
Nearly 35 per cent of homes in the region suffer from fuel poverty, making it the worst-affected area in the whole of the UK.
Ian McLean, a spokesman for consultancy firm RD Energy Solutions, told the paper: "The biomass opportunities are more readily achievable and North Uist could follow several other mainland communities in developing a local biomass fuel supply company."
Biomass could be the better short-term option as wind turbines would carry a £2 million price tag and could take years to connect to the local grid.
Offshore wind farms are being increasingly preferred in the UK for larger projects as more turbines can be constructed while being less of a topographical eyesore.
