Cheap energy housing scheme launched in Long Sutton - 03/07/2009

A housing scheme in Long Sutton may suit homeowners looking to compare energy prices as a range of features could help reduce domestic bills.

Lincolnshire Rural Housing Association has developed Unity Gardens on Bridge Road in Long Sutton in collaboration with SEArch, which specialises in environmentally-friendly architecture and offers features such as vertical-axis wind turbines and solar panels, reports the Spalding Guardian.

The development is the latest result of the earth-sheltered housing concept that has been informed by a PhD thesis from Dr Jerry Harrall of SEArch.

Substantial energy savings are on offer for people living in the new homes, with residents of a previous development in Honingham, Norfolk, cutting their fuel bills by an impressive 80 per cent and paying less than £5.50 a week.

The government is promoting domestic energy-efficiency around the country as a way of tackling high prices from energy suppliers.

Measures such as cavity wall and loft insulation are among the most effective measures advised, while efficient boilers and microgeneration equipment are also encouraged.
