More Britons might consider looking for ways to compare energy suppliers after a study found eight in ten people do not know how much they spend on such bills.
Findings by energy provider E.ON have shown that 80 per cent of people are unaware of their total gas and electricity bill, yet 60 per cent know exactly how much they fork out for takeaways.
Since making the discovery, the company has launched a new website featuring an 'energy menu' to help educate consumers about energy in small, bitesize chunks.
Speaking to the Mirror, spokeswoman for the firm Emma Thompson, said: "We hope that by giving customers information in a digestible format they'll be able to quickly work out how appliances can be used most efficiently.
"Small actions like switching off your mobile phone charger when it's not in use can shave £14 a year off your electricity bill - allowing you to treat yourself to something extra at the takeaway."
The website explains to consumers how much it will cost to carry out tasks in the home, potentially spurring Britons on to look for ways of investing in cheap energy deals.
