HeatSeekers vehicle to promote cheap energy practices in Allerdale - 02/10/2009

Residents in Allerdale, Cumbria, could be inspired to compare energy rates from rival suppliers and install insulation when a HeatSeekers van pays a visit.

The vehicle will be in Allerdale from Monday (October 5th) and will be using thermal imaging cameras to assess the energy-efficiency of homes in the town, while specialists will be on hand to offer advice to residents, reports the Times and Star.

Imaging is carried out at night to cause minimum disruption to local communities and as many as 1,000 different properties can be evaluated in the space of a single hour.

Kim Suttle, Allerdale council's housing services manager, told the paper: "This is in no way intrusive and allows energy advisors from the Energy Saving Partnership to offer free advice."

She added that the costs of installing measures such as cavity wall and loft insulation can be made back in less than two years through cheap energy rates.

Buying energy-efficient white goods and ensuring electrical devices are not left on standby when not in use can also help reduce emissions and energy bills.
