Wind farm cancellation means firms will not access lower business energy costs - 04/12/2009
Prices from regional energy suppliers will not be reduced by a wind farm in the Bristol Channel following news that the development has been cancelled.
Scarweather Sands off Porthcawl was intended to host 30 wind turbines each standing 400 ft tall, but energy suppliers E.On and Dong Energy have pulled out of the £100 million project citing a lack of commercial viability.
The cancellation follows an initial postponement of several years and opposition from local communities.
Dave Rogers, regional director of renewable for E.On, said: "This is not a decision that we've taken lightly. A lot of work has gone into trying to make the project work but, sadly, we've had to recognise that we can't go ahead."
Offshore wind farms tend to be more accepted by nearby communities as they are frequently developed several miles out to sea where their visual impact is minimal.
The government intends to develop more offshore projects in the coming years.
