Schools urged to focus on cheap energy efficiency - 04/03/2010

Proposals have been unveiled to rank schools by their commitment to cheap energy in order to improve efficiency and sustainability.

North Lincolnshire Council said schools should be encouraged to reduce the amount of gas and electricity they consume from energy suppliers in order to help the region and the country at large reduce carbon emissions, reports This is Scunthorpe.

Councillor Bernard Regan, cabinet member for highways and planning, said that as north Lincolnshire's 82 schools currently use 45 per cent of the council's total energy consumption, school staff and pupils must be encouraged to think about green issues.

"We must reduce our energy consumption [by] 20 per cent by 2020," he said.

"As a council we use a variety of energy and to reduce our carbon footprint and that of all of the residents in North Lincolnshire will be a hard task."

The Infrastructure Planning Commission was launched this week to help implement energy projects across the country.
