Government 'must focus on cheap energy' - 04/05/2010

The government needs to do more to exploit cheap energy, an eco-friendly organisation has argued.

According to Environmental Protection UK, the government needs to promote sustainability and meet climate change targets by introducing new technologies.

Ed Dearnley, policy officer at the organisation, pointed out that a recent Environmental Audit Committee report of the government record for meeting air quality target has been "damning" and has revealed that not enough is being done to meet European emissions targets.

"There are reasons for meeting targets, but the government has not given enough priority to meeting them," he said.

"They have just assumed that technical progress and emissions from individual vehicles like cars, lorries and buses will sort the problem out, which it hasn’t really."

According to the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee report, which was released earlier this year, poor air quality reduces the life expectancy of the average UK citizen by an average of seven to eight months.
