Manchester City Council calls for cheap energy investment - 01/06/2010

Local authorities have called for the government to invest in sustainable cheap energy initiatives.

According to Manchester City Council, even though finding the necessary investment to make the UK more sustainable may be difficult, the government must strive to generate those funds.

Councillor Nigel Murphy, the council's executive member for the environment, explained that home owners must be offered incentives to increase their energy efficiency.

Speaking at the opening of the Greenbuild Expo 2010 event, Mr Murphy commented: "The start we have made in supporting homeowners and landlords to implement energy saving measures to reduce their fuel bills and carbon emissions is going to have to move to a whole new scale."

He added that retrofitting work on existing homes can be a significant enterprise that can save a lot of money and create many new jobs.

In November 2009, Manchester City Council launched a document which sets out the local authority plan to save over 350,000 tonnes of CO2 a year by 2020 through a major programme of retrofitting domestic buildings with energy efficiency.
