Asda's NI stores now run on 100% green business energy - 02/08/2010
Supermarket chain Asda has announced that all its 14 stores in Northern Ireland are now powered by 100 per cent renewable business energy.
The switch to 100 per cent green energy takes Asda one step closer to meeting its target of buying 100 per cent of its business energy requirements from renewable sources for its 376 stores across the UK, reports the Belfast Telegraph.
Asda has signed up with energy suppliers Airtricity, a move the company said would enable it to consume around 30 per cent less business energy and significantly reduce its carbon footprint.
David Olivivant, Asda energy procurement manager, told the Belfast Telegraph: "This is another major milestone for Asda in Northern Ireland and is proof that we are living up to our green credentials and aspirations."
He added that Asda's goal is to run its supermarkets as effectively and efficiently as possible, making cost savings wherever possible.
Asda's US-based parent company Walmart has set an energy efficiency savings target of 20 per cent by the end of 2010 across all of its existing stores.
