Refusing to switch gas or electricity supplier could be costing Britain's energy customers £4 billion a year in wasted opportunities, research has calculated.
A study by industry regulator Ofgem has found that 58 per cent of cheap energy consumers have never carried out an energy comparison to find the best deal for them, while 57 per cent admit to feeling apathetic towards such a process.
Meanwhile, moneysupermarket claims this attitude could be preventing households from saving hundreds of pounds on their energy bills each year, adding up to billions of extra pounds per annum.
The winter months are when individuals use 40 per cent of their yearly energy consumption, so now is a good time to be comparing gas and electricity prices.
It comes as energy supplier EDF announces a freeze on its standard prices of electricity and gas for domestic customers until March 2011, while Scottish & Southern Energy said prices will be rising from December 1st.
