Four-fifths (80 per cent) of people are still in the dark about how much their cheap energy supply costs them, according to a survey.
The research, carried out by County Homesearch, revealed that 85 per cent of respondents are aware how much a litre of petrol is and are confident about the price of a litre of heating oil, which suggests that both of these are advertised regularly.
However, eight out of ten people do not know the cost of a kWh of energy, which County Homesearch says is down to a lack of transparency shown by energy suppliers.
Jonathan Haward, chair of the company, commented: "Energy tariffs are a minefield and this needs to be rectified, replacing confusion with transparency in all cases. Bills should include the price of energy - I recently phoned one particular energy company and they could not even tell me the cost of a unit of energy.
"This would be unheard of for the majority of daily commodities, where prices are readily available," he added.
