MP welcomes rollout of smart meters - 03/05/2012

An MP in the north-west has welcomed government plans to roll out smart meters to homes across the UK, saying it will enable his constituents to get cheap electricity.

Jake Berry, representative for Turton and Edgworth, observed residents may expect to see their bills fall by hundreds of pounds as a result of the technology, the Bolton News reports.

He said: "The new smart meter will not only give a more accurate figure of the gas and electricity used, but I hope it will encourage suppliers to help consumers save money by switching them to more appropriate tariffs."

It will also help reduce the need for estimated billing, a practice Mr Berry stated he has been opposed to for some time.

Recently, consumer group Which? noted another MP, John Healey, has urged the government to take a firm grip on the programme to ensure costs do not spiral out of control.
