Energy consumption up 3.2% - 01/08/2011

Cheap electricity customers might be interested to hear that the inclement weather last winter saw energy consumption rise 3.2 per cent on the previous year.

This is according to the Department of Energy and Climate Change's digest of energy statistics, which found efforts to reduce usage have not yet made a significant difference to domestic energy customers.

Indeed, production was down by 5.3 per cent on a yearly basis, with oil and gas accounting for 80 per cent of UK energy generation.

Energy dependency stands at 28 per cent, with fossil fuels making up 90 per cent of total energy imports from other countries, while supply from renewable energy was up, accounting for 3.3 per cent of consumption.

Offshore wind capacity increased by 42 per cent, driven by new green energy farm developments.
