Microsoft to launch business energy efficiency monitoring tool - 01/09/2010
Microsoft has announced that it is developing a business energy efficiency tool in conjunction with Reading University.
The online tool will enable companies to calculate the business energy savings they could realise by migrating to Windows 7, which uses 30 per cent less energy than Windows XP, reports Business Green.
Microsoft believes that the online application will allow firms to achieve noticeable business energy savings and reduce their carbon emissions.
Darren Strange, head of environmental sustainability at Microsoft, said: "IT accounts for somewhere between three and five per cent of global carbon emissions and when you consider that there are a billion Windows PCs around the world, we have the ability to deliver substantial carbon savings."
He added that the tool will also enable companies to calculate how much energy and carbon they could save based on how many computers and laptops they have on their premises.
A recent survey from the Carbon Trust found that 74 per cent of senior finance professionals conceded that their company does not measure its carbon footprint.
