Firms 'could miss out' by not planning for green economy move - 04/04/2011

Business energy users are anticipating that a move to a low carbon economy could be a threat rather than an opportunity for growth, research has shown.

The Carbon Trust's survey found 52 per cent of small and medium businesses believe a greener economy will damage their prospects and less than a third (29 per cent) think it will lead to greater profits, Business Green reported.

Such an attitude may result in smaller firms missing out on the opportunities afforded by a market for green goods and services, the Trust warned.

"We want to help Britain's small firms to seize the opportunities presented by green growth through cutting costs or developing greener products and services," said Ian Gibson, the Carbon Trust's director of delivery programmes.

"Businesses that do not embrace the green economy risk losing out. As larger firms look to reduce carbon in their supply chains, SMEs that don't act now could get cut out in favour of greener competitors."

Companies could get the ball rolling by switching to green energy tariffs.
