Energy supplier says greener power will cost the consumer - 22/06/2009

Homeowners such as those looking to compare energy prices should be made aware that making the national supply greener will be costly, according to one supplier.

Andrew Duff, chief executive officer of RWE npower, said that while the government has agreed consumers have the right to low energy costs, it has not clarified that prices are likely to rise in the pursuit of greener power, reports Business Green.

While the potential economic benefits of going green are readily explained to the public, probable rises in domestic prices to fund the transition have not been discussed as openly, he claimed.

Mr Duff told the website: "Our leaders told the public they had a right to expect a return to the low costs of the past. This is wrong. Collectively we need to start telling our public a few home truths about the real and significant costs they will have to face."

All the UK's major energy companies increased their prices through 2008 and have implemented only minor reductions so far this year.
