SSE witnesses drop in consumer and business energy demand - 04/02/2010

Scottish and Southern Electricity (SSE) has witnessed a drop in demand for consumer and business energy, new figures show.

Despite the cold snap, the energy supplier said this winter, gas demand was down by five per cent, while electricity demand fell by four per cent compared with the same period last year.

However, the company said its number of customers has increased by 200,000 to 9.75 million and it remains on course to meet its full year targets and deliver moderate profits.

SSE also said that it has given all its pre-pay customers £12 credit to help them with the cost of their heating bills.

Ian Marchant, chief executive of SSE, said: "SSE has performed well in the second half of the financial year, with sound performance in our day-to-day operations and solid progress in our major investment projects."

He added that the company's priorities are now to round off the financial year successfully and make a good start to the next one.
